‘GOT YOUR EYES ON’ EXHIBITION - 1998

So these photos were taken in the lead up to Marty’s first solo show at his studio in Wellington which he shared with Simon Morse.

They were such great days down there I’d never met any one like them before and couldn’t believe how huge their toy collections were!

We would spend hours in that studio talkin ‘bout “Taking Switchblade to America” and world domination.

There was a constant stream of fans, friends, freaks , groupies and junkies dropping by at all hours of the day! These were special guys and attracted a huge crowd of people.

We put on 2 shows, one at Wellingtons James Smith markets and the other at The Area in Auckland St Kevins arcade. It was a huge new direction for Marty’s art, I had met him during his White Trash and Verotik days, so really was taken aback when he revealed the lovable character Switchblade! From that show we basically packed it up into a huge art folder and went door knocking around San Francisco Galleries. We were both huge fans of the great Frisco artists like Rick Griffin and Stanley Mouse so it seemed like a logical step! That was a pretty fun group to go with: Marty, Myself, Devil girl Vania and that lunatic Splash!

So many hilarious adventures were had over those weeks. Those photos were taken at Juxtapoz HQ as well as visiting Glenn Danzig’s Verotik offices. We actually ended up setting up the show at L.A’s La Lus de Jesus gallery on Hollywood BLVD, which is kinda where Marty moved around in Los Feliz - he loved that area and goin down to La Luz was always epic!View all photos below…
